Allens Kids Triathlon 2010

Congratulations to all those who participated in this years' Allens Kids Triathlon held on Sunday 14 March 2010 at the Onerahi foreshore.

The Allens Northland Kids Triathlon is one of the biggest sporting events of the summer.
The Allens Kids Triathlon is an annual event, held for the first time
in 2004, which attracts around 1,000 children - plus thousands of
supporters.  As a family orientated company we are delighted to
be running an event which helps empower the children of today
to become the fulfilled and successful adults of tomorrow.

The triathlon is about getting out there and having a go!
The event is open to kids aged between 8-14 years on the day
of the event, and is held down on the Onerahi foreshore.  Kids
enter on their own which means that they swim, bike and run
(in that order). It is truly an amazing day out for the family.

View photos of this year's event above and below.

Cancer Society - Relay For Life 2010

Allens were proud to enter a team in this year's Cancer Society Relay for Life.  We joined together with people of all ages from all walks of life to:

•  Celebrate - the lives of those who have battled cancer.
•  Remember - the loved ones lost to the disease.
•  Fight Back - We make a commitment to save lives by taking up the fight.

Relay for Life raises money and awareness for the extraordinary work the Cancer Society does supporting those with cancer in our community, their caregivers and their families.  A non-Government organisation funded by the generosity of individuals and businesses, they ensure all those affected by cancer have access to free information and support from the moment of diagnoses right through their treatment and recovery.

This was our first time involved in Relay for Life and we found it a truly amazing community event with the bonus of being a great team building activity - it was an event we felt privileged to be a part a part of.   Along with those willing Allens team members, various children and grandchildren of the Allens team were dragged protesting into participating.  These reluctant offspring were soon taken by the event … one 11 year old walked/ran and talked his way through 123 laps between 2pm and midnight, stopping only when his Grandma forced him into bed and sat on him till he fell asleep!  Jackson Younger (aged 6) walked 50 laps.  Meanwhile, two teenagers in our group, dragged along under true teenage protest, walked 230 laps between them - they vowed next year they were not going to be part of Grandma's team … they got such a kick out of it that they're organising their own team for next year!  An indication of just what a superb event Relay for Life is.

Northland Results as we have them to date are:

•  $45,194.60 raised with more coming in.
•  $1225.40 of this was raised by the Allens Team.
•  There were 726 registered team members in total.
•  Approximately 45,440 laps were walked in total (this equated to walking from the southern tip of South America, through North America and into Canada, a total of approx 18,112 km!).
•  1152 of those laps were walked by the Allens Team - which we believe to be one of the highest team totals at this years event (Thanks kids!).

Allens Mini Design Competition ... Congratulations Jason Povey!

Recently we asked locals to expose their creative side with the Allens Mini Design Competition.

After removing our old vehicle graphics from our fleet of company Mini Coopers, we were feeling a little exposed! So Allens turned to the community for their help and creativity in redesigning the graphics for our four company vehicles.

We were looking for unique designs that could be applied to our company vehicles.  Designs which stood out and captured the essence of our brand.  Entrants were competing for both fame and an awesome prize including a Sony Vaio Laptop, a Panasonic Digital Camera or an ipod shuffle.

We would like to congratulate Jason Povey for his winning Kiwiana inspired housing design which has been applied to one of our Minis.

Northland Rugby

This year Allens are one of the countless Northland Rugby Supporters - and proud of it.

With over 6,800 registered players and more than 50 clubs across Northland, Rugby is New Zealand's and indeed Northland's highest profiled sport. The sport generates great passion amongst Northlanders with over 42,000 people attending Northland Games at Okara Park each year. This year Allens are proud to be supporting the Northland Taniwha, and in particular, Northland lock Cameron Jowitt.

Cameron captained Auckland's Kings College 1st XV Rugby and 1st XI Cricket teams. He went on to play for the New Zealand Secondary Schools rugby team in 2001 and then for New Zealand Universities before playing NPC for Auckland. From 2005 to 2008 Cameron played Rugby in Ireland and for Leinster Rugby's Lansdowne Road RFC.

We at Allens are passionate about supporting our community are pleased to be able to help Cameron further his very promising career.

Loudest Shirt Day 2009

The Allens Team recently let their crazy out by taking party in the National Loud Shirt Day on Friday 18 September, 2009.

This is the one day of the year the team don't need an excuse for their fashoin faux pas, and are actually encouraged to toss the suits aside to instead step out in their loudest, brightest shirts.

Loud Shirt Day is the annual appeal of the Hearing House and the Southern Cochlear Implant Paediatric Programme, two charities who are dedicated to enabling deaf children with a cochlear implant to listen and speak like their hearing peers.

Have a look at our photos above - including some of our fearless leaders (Allens Company Directors Vanessa McKenzie and John Monteith), as well as the rest of our team having some fun to support this great cause. Some of internal "Loudest Shirt Day Awards" included "Loudest (LOUDEST) Shirt" (Sharon Ball - great shirt, but please leave the duck whistle at home next year, or at least bring us earplugs): "Loudest Rookie" (Raewyn McKay); "Loudest Op-Shopper" (Gary Younger - althought the clothes "fit" quite well...are you sure these weren't out of your wardrobe Gary?); "Loudest Old Rocker" (Gwenda Pippen); "Loudest in Brand" (well done Di Wright, Doug MacDonald and Rita Servay-Adams - we always knew those Allens Kids Triathlon Shirts would come in handy for something!); and how could we forget the effort of Denis Lloyd for "Loudest White Shirt"! And finally, there was no escaping our "Loudest Collector" Robyn Wright, as we parted with more than just our lunch money.

Until next year...
