Creating Opportunities for the Youth of Northland
2010/2011 Allens Education Foundation Applications are Now Open.
The Allens Education Foundation is an approved charitable trust offering up to $10,000 in scholarships annually to Northland youth who demonstrate a passion for excellence and are looking to achieve their career goals through further education and training.
Allens Education Foundation Scholarships Recipients will each receive up to $3,000 each in funding to be used toward their approved course of study. Last year five scholarship recipients were selected from an impeccable field of over 90 applicants representing schools and families across Northland. We are continually impressed by the standard of applicants, and the drive of these young Northlanders, who year after year make it harder and harder for us to make our final selection.

2009 Allens Education Foundation Scholarship Recipients were:
Shelane Lomas Shelane is from Whangarei Girls High School. She will be studying at Auckland University to gain a Bachelor Degree followed by a Masters in Architecture.
Shelane is a top academic student with a strong passion for creativity and design. She won First Place Senior for Communication Design, as well as being the overall category winner for Communication Design, and was chosen to represent Whangarei Girls' High School in the 2009 New Zealand Young Designer of the Year Competition.
She has been described as "not only [an] exeptional student but [one who] uses her considerable leadership ability for the benefit of others. Shelane is a shining example of a 21st century citizen who will continue to make a considerable contribution to society".
Shelane tells us her long-term goal is to "set up my own business that pushes the boundaries of modern architecture in NZ while creating warmer, drier and healthier buildings that maintain a reduced impact on the environment".
Barney Olson Barney, a multi talented student from Kerikeri High School, has a passion for the theatre and performing arts. He will be studying for a conjoint Bachelor of Arts / Bachelor of Commerce degree at Victoria University and combining this with further study in theatre.
Barney us a consistent high achiever who is held in high regard. Some of his achievements include Head Boy and Prefect, volunteer fire brigade, black belt karate, jazz band member and a mulitude of productions, performances and sports competitions.
Barney says "Whether on stage, behind the scenes, in a directing role, or in any other form, there is no environment in which I am as interested or fulfilled as the theatre, surrounded by emotions and thoughts, I feel challenged through drama, I love it, it is what I want to do, and I am going to give it my best shot."
Kawiti Jack Waetford Kawiti has immense passion for singing and performing, and has chosen Otago University as a starting point to further develop his classical singing technique. His aim is to be ranked among the top singers in the world.
Some of his many musical achievements include a workshop with Dame Kiri Te Kanawa, singing a duet with Elizabeth Marvelley and as a solist at Rotorua's Oper in the Park, studied and performed at Shakespears' Globe Theatre, performed at New Zealand House in London, featured soloist with the Auckland Philharmonic Orchestra, and performed duet and ensemble at Auckland's Coca Cola Christmas in the Park.
Heavily committed to his community, Kawiti is Northland's Young Advisor to the Children's Commissioner and often gives freely of his time to perform locally for fundraising concerts and charitable events. He has been described as "an intelligent young man with great charm and a maturity and humility that few his age have and that special quality of mana".
Corinne Marti Corinne is from Kerikeri High School. She has chosen to study a Bachelor of Law conjoint with a Bachelor of Science at Auckland University with a goal to specialise in the law and ethics of medicine. In addition to her role as Deputy Head Girl and Prefect, Corinne has gained honours awards in academic, cultural and leadership areas.
She has been described as having "determination to succeed in whatever she does but will not do so at the cost to others. Rather she will encourage others to succeed alongside her and will be generous in her support of the team as a whole".
Concerned about the implications of science on healthcare in the future. Corinne comments: "Whilst I have an immense passion for science I believe that there must be a balance between the advances and the morality behind it. This is what motivates me to become a lawyer and work in the health sector so that one day I can be part of it".
Sam Sharp Sam, from Whangarei Girls' High School, plans to go to Otago University for a double degree studying a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science and a Bachelor of Physical Education in Outdoor Education.
She is a highly accomplished student dedicated to school and community activities - including Deputy Head Girl, school pianist. Adventure Racing Team and many sporting and cultrual activities. She participated in the National Young Leaders Day and was awarded the Most Outstanding Hillary Challenge Team Member.
Sam is described as a "sincere and personable young woman who has consistently shown that she cares about her community and the environment". She shows tenacity and great strength of character and we admire her aspiration to sustainably manage our environment for the enjoyment of future generations.

from Whangarei Boys High School - Aaron has chosen to complete a Degree in Engineering, majoring in Chemical and Process Engineering.
Jared Olsen from Kaitai College - Jared's carrer choice - a Bachelor of Engineering (Chemical or Covil & Environmental) at Auckland University.
Sarah Snowden from Northland College - Sarah's career goal is to become a PE and Health Teacher.
Rex Hooper from Tauraroa Area School - Rex is interested in Chemical Engineering.
Dhamendra Unka from Kamo High School - Dhamendra comes from a unique cultural background as a Maori-Indian New Zealander. He has a genuine social conscience and his sense of justice is acute. He was inspired by a trip to India in 2001 to complete his Law degree and become a Crown Lawyer.
Sheridan Mellor from Tikipunga High School - Sheridan will be studying for a Bachelor of Visual Arts followed by a jewellery apprenticeship.
Holly Pratt from Whangarei Whangarei Girls High School - Holly has aspired to be a teacher since primary school and will be studying for a Secondary Teaching Degree conjoint with a Bachelor of Arts majoring in English or Geography. She is also considering a Graduate Diploma in Journalism.

Gauri Prasad from Pompellier Collage who would like to pursue a career as a Medical Practitioner.
Rory Tayor from Bream Bay high School who wishes to study a Bachelor of Science degree.
Alux Pivac from Kamo High School who wishes to study a Bachelor of Science degree.
Emma Daly from Tauraroa Area School who wishes to complete a Bachelor of Science majoring in Neroscience.
Cameron Leslie from Pompallier Catholic College who wishes to gain a degree in jounralism specialising in sports writing.
Josh Hodgson from Pompallier Catholic College who is looking to complete to a BA in Sport & Recreation and work with and coach young children
